What were they thinking?

November 29, 2006

This was my first reaction as I drove up the driveway today and saw one blue shirt disappear from the roof line into a window.  I am not sure who was the instigator of the idea, but both kids are grounded for the evening, regardless.  There is a time when you think you can leave your child alone for 30 minutes or so.  This is well before you can leave the charmers together obviously!  At almost 12 and 13 you would think that common sense would rear its head in one or other of them, but apparently not….. ball on roof, nip out of window, retrieve ball and get back in – no problem right?  The only problem it seems was that Mama overreacted at the sight!

Fortunately we will all live to see another day!

A long trip to school

November 18, 2006

On Wednesday, the 10 minute trip to school took all of 75 minutes!  That really puts a spanner in the organization for the morning.  The child in the back was on his way to school and getting rather agitated that we went a different way and the time it took.  At one point he wanted to walk, and trust me it was not that bad an idea as we were grinding along at zip miles per hour.  As time went on he really wanted me turn back.  The idea of walking into school half way through a lesson, was upsetting him.

Fortunately the school is very small and geared to individual instruction of special kids, so his teacher had no problem when he walked in.  In fact he was only the second one to arrive as everyone else hit the same problems on the road. Even so it took a few minutes of down time for him to settle and be in a frame of mind to work.   This time is critical to children with Asperger’s who sometimes need to close down and regroup.

The teacher reported that he ws fine after just a few minutes and was able to start and finish his work on time.

Introduction

November 13, 2006

This is the first post on this site.  The blog will be geared around the house, the family and the pets.  The house is just outside Atlanta GA; the family contains 1 husband, two grown kids (one just graduated with MA, one in final year of BA); two younger kids (13 yrs old, and 11).  They are all guys, and I am the one lady of the house.  The 11 year old has Asperger’s Syndrome which makes life interesting.  Currently we are without any pets – the last one left our company 6 weeks ago, so we are taking a pet-break for a week or two.  For fun I write and garden.  See the garden blog at . http://gardenramblings.blogspot.com/
